Rock and Roll Years
by Bobby Poe Jr
Here are some of the songs I grew up with, covering each year from 1964 through 1980. To make things interesting, I have allowed only ONE song per artist per year. I've had the advantage of growing up around and working in the music business and I hope it shows in these playlists!
I have always loved to compile playlists of my favorite songs, starting from the very first days of cassette tapes in the 1970's. Over the years I graduated to burning CDs with my faves on them, which literally took hours, just like in the cassette tape days. Now however - in the streaming age - all of a sudden it's like having every song ever recorded at my fingertips. Compiling playlists is exponentially much easier, yet it's still one of my favorite ways to while away the hours.
Amazon Music was chosen as the method to create my playlists. I hope you enjoy my efforts and, hey, there's nothing that says you can't cherry pick from these playlists to compile your own!
Don't have Amazon Music? You can transfer these playlists to your streaming service of choice for free by using Tune my Music or Soundiiz. Simply click the reddish direct link line under the year you want and copy the URL when you are taken to Amazon Music. Then go to Tune my Music or Soundiiz and follow the steps to transfer a playlist.
Here's 40 years of artists and tracks associated with the Washington, DC area music scene. These artists either got their start on the DC club scene or were born in the DC area. Also included are curios such as members of DC band The Cherry People jamming with none other than Jimi Hendrix in NYC!
Each song is a memory from my days working with my dad at Bobby Poe's Pop Music Survey from 1979 until his retirement in 1996. Many of these artists were brought to our annual Convention, came by our office or I got to see and meet them in concert.
